On November 16, Either/Or returns to MISE-EN_PLACE (M-E_P) in Harlem to present a set of works that create singular sound worlds by various means, from live-electronics and altered field recordings to natural tuning systems and group improvisation. The group revisits the work of two important composers from previous seasons: Chiyoko Szlavnics and George Lewis. In 2022, EO presented a program entirely comprised of works by the Canadian-born, Berlin-based composer Szlavnics. At M-E_P, the group brings two examples of her microtonal violin duo, accordion, and sine tone music from 2006 to life. World-renowned polymath George Lewis is a long-time mentor and colleague of the group. EO flutist Margaret Lancaster will perform his 2015 work Emergent (2015) for flute and ambisonic live electronics, a piece that blurs lines between original and copy through spatialized sound. EO Co-Director and trombonist Chris McIntyre’s Aravali Folds 2 (a premiere and his EO compositional debut) melds the particular ensemble timbre present with recorded sounds he collected traveling in India. The concert will conclude with selections from legendary French composer Luc Ferrari’s collection Exercices d’improvisation (1977), marking the group’s first engagement with this seminal figure in musique concrète and electronic sound.
