EO presents the New York Premiere of composer and EO Director composer Richard Carrick’s The Atlas, an hour-long work for piano and string quartet that manifests in music various tales of exploring, belonging, revisiting, longing and blissful enjoyment. In Carrick’s words: “The Atlas is inspired by stories about individuals, communities, ancestry, and unknown peoples and places. It sonically traverses the ocean, desert, forest, city, and home.” The music traces influences that include Tom Waits, Algerian Chaabi music, Iancu Dumitrescu, and Henry Cowell. Presented in nine movements, The Atlas is an embodiment of the narrative between composer and piano, experimenting throughout with extended techniques inside the instrument.  Carrick’s writing for string quartet in the work is customized for and inspired by the unique skills of the composers’ longtime collaborators in Either/Or.
